Pursuing Awe

Awe is the first step towards wisdom, but wisdom in itself is not the final destination. Wisdom merely opens the door to revelation that flows from an intimate knowledge of God’s heart. Who is this God who risked everything on two humans, knowing He Himself would then go to the cross to make it right? Who is this God who defines pain and pleasure in terms altogether inhuman? It could be argued that we mortal beings cannot truly know the heart of God without also knowing the awe of God. Yet He desires nothing more than for us to know His heart in all its exhilarating, terrifying splendor. You are invited to join a small group on the journey of a lifetime as we seek to come face to face with the awe-inspiring displays of God’s nature in the pages of scripture. With the rigorous discipline of an extreme athlete, we will practice Arthur’s trademark Bible Study methods to get inside the Biblical accounts. This course will stretch your imagination and exercise muscles you never knew existed, but the prize at the end will be worth the effort. This class is designed to make Bible Study a delightful part of daily life, so participants must be willing to devote 45 min to an hour each day to their pursuits. Between classes, participants will wrestle with Scripture and the Holy Spirit to find actionable insights for their personal lives, and then share those insights in a supportive group video chat on the course website. For those who long to take Bible Study and intimacy with God to the next level, this is the place for you!

Growing up in the church I was marinated in Sunday School stories. I learned to respect the Bible and handle it with reverence. As a young adult I was hungry to find light and life within its pages and delved deep into the original language. A religious spirit enslaved me, and I fell mired into the hair-splitting of doctrine. After a time, I was introduced to Sapphire Leadership Group where my Sunday School stories were regularly wrecked. The fresh take on the old familiar story line caused me to fall head over heels in love with the God of the Bible. For years I stood back and marveled at how Arthur could draw such fresh, relevant truth out of a story that had grown moldy in the back of my mind. I chalked it up as being his gift and gave up hope that I could do the same. But…. I was wrong. It’s not a gift, as though it were something exclusively his, but rather it’s a honed skill set, which any one of us could master with enough tenacity. That is why I’m here. If you long for personal intimacy with God that flows from springs of insight in His word and you are willing to embrace the discipline to master the skill set, I will walk alongside you on the journey.
